Kingdom Plantae By Callie Malone

Kingdom Plantae
       Over this last week in AP Biology, we have shifted our focus from Kingdom Protista towards Kingdom Plantae. In the lastest kingdom, we are looking at what makes a plant a plant and how the kingdom is broken down into different main groups. As an opening glance into Kingdom Plantae, we watched a video titled Botany Of Desire which was presented by Michael Pollan and directed by Michael Schwarz.
      The movie presented an interesting idea that I had not really considered before. Botany Of Desire describes how we might not be using plants as much as plants use us. Plants carry out their desires by getting humans to ensure their survival, thanks to appealing to our desires for beauty, sweetness, intoxication and control. The movie is broken down into the four different human appeals that plants play off of.
Apples-Sweetness:
       There are thousands of different breed of apples that stretch all across the world. Originating in Central Asia, the apple become world renowned and an iconic symbol for many different parts of the world. Originally, apples were known to be quite bitter and rather unpleasant to eat such was the case in the early United States. The bitter apples were instead used to make hard cider, a much safer alternative to the polluted and dangerous water at the time. However, apples adapted to have a sweeter taste that people would then eat instead of turning the apple into hard cider. The sweetness of the apple would make possible the chance that humans would nurture the the plant in order to harvest the apples for consumption. Enamored by the great taste of the apple, Americans, along with many other people across the world, ensured the survival of the plant and passed along its genes.
       As I was watching the portion of the video about the apple, I was shocked to find out that there were so many different types of apples, thousands that scattered all around the world. If I were to go to the grocery store, however, I would only be able to find a select few types. Learning that the apple had so many different breeds really did show me just how successful and diverse apple trees were. In capturing the human desire of sweetness, apples were able to greatly diversify and become a global phenomenon.

Tulips-Beauty:
        The tulip is a rather striking flower, capturing the attention of people all throughout the world due to their beauty. While the flower is objectively breathtaking, such an organism cannot be such a powerful entity, or could it? The movie displayed just how much power and wealth this flower commanded back in 1634. The Dutch people were truly taken away by the beauty of the tulip, so much so that the time period gained the title of “Tulip Mania”. You may be thinking to yourself, “Well, just how crazy can a person get over a flower?” and to that I tell you to hold onto your socks. During the time period of Tulip Mania, a single tulip was solid for the equivalent of an apartment on Fifth Avenue. Yes, a single flower was selling for over a million dollars. Are your socks still there? Mine certainly were not after hear the price for the first time. The tulip was able to catch the attention of so many people, as the plant still does to today, and be breed by tulip farmers. Today, the flower business is a multimillion dollar industry. Millions of dollars is not bad for a product that starts to die as soon as it is harvested and serves no practical purpose to own.
       By playing off of the human desire for beauty, the tulip has been able to thrive. Spread all throughout the world, the plant has been given the opportunity to diversify with the help of tulip breeders. I would say that the tulip is coming out on top in their relationship with humans.

Cannabis-Intoxication
        Cannabis, pot, marijuana, or any other nickname, the plant widely recognisable now due to their presence in pop culture and historical influence in American politics. Nearly one hundred Americans have smoked pot at some point in their lifetime. The intoxicating properties that the plant provides has caught the attention and hearts of many people throughout the world. The plant has enamored people so much so that people throughout the history of the United States have risked jail time to grow, sell, and use cannabis. Federal law prohibits the recreational use, selling, and growing of the plant, but the jail time did not stop Americans in their pursuit for the high. People began to breed the twelve foot high plant with a six foot breed in order to be grown inside and at a much faster rate. Growers tend to their cannabis plant very attentive, giveing the plant the maximum amount of nutrients and care that the plant can possibly get.
       There is no doubt to me that the cannabis plant completely has humans under their metaphorical thumb. Due to their intoxicating properties and the human desire for such a high, the cannabis plant is treated like a king. The plant is supplied with the exact amount of care and nutrients in order for the plant to perform at maximum capacity. Their chemical producing highs are just too good for humans to ignore.

Potatoes- Control
       The highly nutritious potato is a staple in the diets of many people all across the globe and all throughout history. The potato is to believably have been around for about eight thousand years and originated in the Andes Mountains. Making their way over to Europe, the potato became immensely important to a whole different group of people. Due to the relatively simple growing measures, more people were allowed to work outside of the farmers while also providing the population with a seemingly reliable food source. Ireland became reliant upon the potato due to the land’s poor growing conditions for other crops. The potato thrived in Ireland, well up until the potato did not. What I mean by this is that the potato had a great demise in the Great Potato Famine in Ireland. The Irish people relied one one specific type of potato, which left the crop susceptible to disease, fungi, and insects. A spore carried over from a Spanish ship wiped out the potato crops in Ireland, sending the entire country into a famine that killed one million people.
      The potato is a widely consumed crop that millions of people across the globe depend upon. The relative ease and convenience of the crop allowed for many different cultures and groups of people to thrive off of. However, humans need to be aware of the dangers on monoculturing. If we depend on one type of crop, whether that be potatoes or otherwise, we can leave ourselves open to the possibilities of a famine due to fungi, disease, or insect.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

       If you are in need of a fascinating and non-fiction science novel, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is the book for you. Over these past months, my AP Biology teammates and I have been reading the book and I have really enjoyed the story. Written by Rebecca Skloot, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks starts in the 1950s and follows the life of Henrietta Lacks and her cells, now known as HeLa cells. Henrietta was a patient at Johns Hopkins and had cervical cancer. While a patient, the doctors at the hospital took a piece of Henrietta’s cancer cells without fully disclosing to her what they were doing and why. These cells went on to make history by helping scientists worldwide discover cures to diseases and save lives.

       The story also entails the lives of her children growing up and as adults. Growing up without a mother, Henrietta’s children were alone, and their father was not around much, leaving them somewhat damaged and afraid to trust others. When Rebecca Skloot first began conducting researching on the story and the Lacks family, the children were especially reluctant to speak with Rebecca. The family also had never been told what happened to Henrietta and that her cells were famous as it was not mandatory nor common practice for doctors to fully disclose details to patients and their families at the time. However, one of Henrietta’s daughters, Deborah, eventually helped the author collect research about Henrietta’s life and medical records.

       I loved reading about Deborah and Rebecca’s adventures and road to justice. Yes, Henrietta’s children never quite got the recognition and benefits that they deserved from Henrietta’s contribution to science, but the story behind it all was beautiful. One of my favorite moments in the book was when Rebecca gave the colored image of Henrietta’s cells to Deborah and Zakariyya, one of Henrietta’s sons, and Zakariyya cried. This moment to me represented Deborah and Zakariyya finally getting to meet and connect with their mom. They had never fully understood the power and impact their mom’s cells had made, so being able to see the beautiful and colorful cells deeply moved them.

       The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks raised many questions and issues in regards to ethics and right versus wrong. The doctors who took Henrietta’s cells did it without her permission and without informing the rest of her family. However, the HeLa cells went on to significantly benefit science and people worldwide. While I am unsure yet if I believe the Lacks family got the closure and justice they deserved, I do believe that their story helped change the world for science and ethics. Now doctors have to disclose all details to patients and must have consent from them.

       Additionally, I admired the work of the author. She never gave up her dream to write the story about Henrietta and her cells even when the Lacks family refused to talk to her. She persisted not for herself, but for the Lacks family. Her motives were selfless. Rebecca created a beautiful novel that should be shared within the scientific community and beyond.

Save the Bay Post-Field Trip

I am back from my field trip, feeling like a new person! It was so nice getting out into nature and staying off technology, even if it was only for a few hours of the day. Save the Bay works to restore and protect the people and animals in the Bay Area. The work this organization is doing is amazing, and if you live in the Bay Area or in places Save the Bay works in, I urge you to volunteer there. save the bay post-field trip blog by kaitlin kiesel

Hi Guys!
Yesterday my AP Bio Team and I went on a field trip to Baylands Nature Preserve with the organization "Save The Bay." During this trip, I was able to see how field data was collected and how we can do our part to preserve the marshlands that are vital to all living organisms.

3 Pieces of Scientific Information I learned:
  1. There are many invasive species that pose a threat to the native species in that area. For example, fennel (the plant used to make black licorice) took over many areas where trees and grass were planted to filter out waste and debris.
  2. The San Francisco Bay is one of Northern California's largest Estuary's.
  3. The bay needs 100,000 acres of wetlands in order to thrive.
Connection To The Classroom
  1. Save The Bay's mission directly relates to citizen science through the act of volunteering to better our earth. They truly believe that small acts can create meaningful changes to our environment. In class, I have been learning a lot about different organisms and how they all contribute different things to our earth. For example, most of the oxygen in our atmosphere comes from plants in the ocean that partake in the process of photosynthesis (phytoplankton being one of them!). Estuaries provide habitat for 75% of the US Commercial fish catch which directly impacts the lives of humans. Through the collection and analyzation of field data and biodiversity in the area, my teammates and I directly impacted the efforts to conserve these marshlands!

One thing I will remember forever is the snake that I saw crossing the levee!




Final Thoughts: Overall, I had the most amazing experience going on this field trip with my AP Bio class. Not only was it fun learning in the sun but being able to stop and appreciate the little things we take for granted everyday was so peaceful. The SF Bay supports so much wildlife and we should all do our part to preserve it as much as we can! Coming back from this field trip motivated me to limit my use of plastic and order more reusable snack bags on amazon! Stay tuned for another blog post on my next field trip:)

Save the Bay Pre-Trip

    When looking back at my early years as a student, field trips were some of the most memorable days in my entire education. Not only was it a chance to experience new things, but field trips also gave us the opportunity to learn about the topics we had studied in class in a new environment. Unfortunately, as I grew older, the importance of field trips did not seem to be recognized nearly as much as I thought it should be. While in middle school I participated in multiple field trips every year when I get to high school this totally changed. Field trips were once a year - if that - and only in a very select few classes. During my freshman year, I don’t think I went on a single field trip.

    I am extremely excited to go on this trip for many reasons. Asides from the fact that I rarely get to leave the school campus, I also really like what we are doing. Today we will be working with Save the Bay to help restore plants and maintain the environment in the Palo Alto Marshlands. There are so many important species that require these marshlands to even survive. Doing this work is vital to help maintain the environment and therefore the species living in it. Not to mention, going off campus gives me the opportunity to learn in a more interactive environment. Many of the topics we have been studying in bio, I will get to witness first hand. I am really hoping to learn more about how to help the environment in my day-to-day. I also want to learn more about the species living in the areas I am helping and why they are important. Overall, I am very excited about this field trip.

Season 7 Reflection- Alysa Villanueva


Season 7 Reflection 

The concept of Genetics is often labeled as a topic that focuses on learning about the DNA and genes found in the human body. To be honest, Genetics has not always been a topic of science I have liked because of the focus on the human body placed when learning about genetics. However, this season, I found out that genetics not only fascinates me but also directly connects to the major I wish to pursue in college- food science or nutrition.

My favorite lab by far has to be the pGLO lab. When we started the pGLO lab I thought that I would not be able to accomplish the lab because of how complicated the processes seamed. However, once my fellow lab partners and I started the lab, I realized how much I actually knew. For example, I remembered my micropipette skills and remembered how much fun they are to use. Overall, I would say that I love this lab because we were able to literally make bacteria glow! We took E. Coli Bacteria and mixed the bacteria with a pQuince plasmid. A Plasmid is a ring of DNA typically from a different organism that is absorbed by a bacteria in order to change the DNA of the original organism. The pQuince plasmid contained GFP (Green Fluorescent Protein) gene and the regulatory gene for GFP, Ara. An origin gene was also added so that the DNA start could replicate. And finally, the Amp gene was added to make the bacteria that would absorb pQuince ampicillin resistant. In order to increase the chances of the bacteria absorbing the plasmid, the bacteria have to undergo heat shock so that little pore could be created. In our conclusions, we found that the bacteria that was able to grow and glow was on the agar plate with ampicillin, lysogeny broth, and arabinose sugar.

This season, I also enjoyed learning about biotechnology especially biotechnology found and used in agriculture. The topic that stood out to me the most was Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) because GMOs directly connect to Food Science. I learned that GMOs are created by taking the DNA of one organism and adding that DNA to the DNA of the target organism in order to improve that organism. What fascinated me the most about GMOs is that scientists are now able to change the DNA of crops so that they can grow in conditions they could not before. For example, in my group project on Agriculture Applications, we talk about how, in India, crops such as rice have are being genetically modified to be able to grow in the high salinity waters. India is a country that has minimal food sources so GMOs can benefit their health. Check out more of my presentation below!



This season, I learned a lot about genetics and I discovered a new topic that interests me. I am excited to see where the next season on Evolution goes and beyond that, I am excited to see where science will take me in the future!

Meiosis in Plant Cells by Venetia Prontzos



Hey everyone! This week in class, we learned about meiosis in both plant and animal cells. My partner and I created a video using stop-motion to depict and explain in detail the process of meiosis, specifically in plant cells. Meiosis is a process that is broken up into 2 steps. The goal of meiosis is to divide a diploid cell, or parent cell, into 4 haploid cells, or daughter cells. The diploid's duplicated DNA is transferred into the haploid cells with half the number of duplicated chromosomes. Check it out and feel free to leave a comment!



The process of making this video was a little challenging at first, but overall, it was really fun and informative. As I was physically making this project, I was able to learn about meiosis more effectively. I have now retained more information than I probably would have if I had simply taken notes on meiosis in class. Using the app, Stop Motion Studio, made the process much easier by using techniques to take multiple pictures at a time. I have definitely gained something from this project and I cannot wait to use stop-motion again in the future!
