Hi everyone! This week I worked with a team to research the Catholic Church’s position on In Vitro Fertilization and while I was not entirely surprised with the result, the reasoning was fascinating to uncover. Take a look at my presentation, I hope you are as curious as I was!
Here is my presentation!
When I first started researching the church’s position on IVF, I went straight to looking for what the Pope’s position was. My team and I predicted that the church would be against IVF as the creation of babies is through technology and not natural conception. When I came across Donum Vitae, I was shocked how intense the church’s views were on the creation and destruction of human embryos. To say that infertile couples need to accept God’s will for them was hard for me to swallow and I believe that if two people really want children they should be allowed to try however they would like I personally, disagree with the church’s stance on IVF and would be curious to hear about the opinions of IVF doctors who may also be Catholic.
As for the group work, my team split up the slides into four sections so we could all equally contribute. Everyone was able to complete their works before the deadline and we also had time to discuss our findings and thoughts. Some improvements I think could be made are finding more of a variety of quotes from Pope Francis. The slide with the quote is said again in the video, and becomes repetitive. We should have noticed this and found a new but similar quote regarding the dignity of IVF. There was quite a bit of information on our topic, so I do not think that finding a more specific view from Pope Francis or past Popes would have been an issue. With the presentation, my team tried to separate our own beliefs to the facts of the project. Although we disagreed with the church, our research was about facts and not opinions. We could have mentioned more about the scientific side of IVF and what stages embryos are implanted and discarded to give more of a foundation on what differentiates a sperm and egg to a human being. Overall, I really enjoyed this assignment and I would be interested to learn more about the variety of views on IVF from different beliefs and backgrounds.
